Belle Isle
I went exploring this morning and decided to take a stroll to Belle Isle. Actually it was more like a hike because it was a bit further than I had anticipated. Belle Isle is a small island in the middle of the James River. It is surrounded by rapids and has historical significance as a Civil War prison, hydroelectric plant, and metal manufacturing factory. Today it is used for recreation and features several trails and walking paths. Check it out…

To get there, you have to walk across a suspension bridge. The bridge hangs below a major overpass. It’s a little nerve wracking, but very cool too!

Here’s a view of the Richmond Skyline as seen from the suspension bridge on the Belle Isle side.

See what I mean about the rapids?

This was taken near the Hydroelectric plant. I’m told that in the summer lots of people hang out and get a sun tan in this area. I wish it were summer ; )
